Our Beginning

The Empty Cup Project was born not from paperwork, but from action — from a shared belief that young people in rural communities deserve space to move, grow, and connect with heart.

In the spirit of mindfulness and presence, four friends came together to create a 10-week basketball fundamentals program for youth. Each weekly session became more than just skill-building — it became a quiet practice of patience, focus, teamwork, and joy. Through movement, mentorship, and encouragement, the seeds of compassion, resilience, and inner strength were planted.

Before we had a name, a logo, or a formal organization, we had what mattered most: young people gathered in community, growing together. This is the spirit we carry forward — the empty cup, ready to be filled with possibility.

How It’s Going

The Empty Cup Project has grown quietly, much like the seeds we first planted on the court. What began with basketball drills and laughter in a small gym has started to ripple outward into the wider community.

We’ve kept the heart of our work simple: creating spaces where young people can move, connect, and belong. Alongside the rhythm of basketball, we’ve opened doors to new programs — summer camps, recreational leagues, and activities designed to spark teamwork and joy. Each step has been guided not by chasing more, but by asking: What helps our youth feel stronger, safer, and more connected right here, where they live?

And while the bounce of the ball still echoes in our story, we’ve also begun to look inward. We’re exploring ways to bring mental wellness coaching and supportive spaces to our programs. Just as a body grows through play, the mind grows through reflection, resilience, and compassion. We are building toward that next chapter, one conversation, one partnership, one careful step at a time.

Through it all, our practices stay the same: patience, intention, harmony, and reflection. We continue to hold the cup empty — not to fill it with more, but to make space for what is needed next.

The journey that started with four friends is now shared by a growing circle of youth, families, and community members. This is how it’s going: steady, intentional, and full of possibility.
